The Forgiven (2021), a crime drama film, is both written and directed by John Michael McDonagh and adapted from the 2012 novel of the same name by Lawrence Osborne. Married couple David and Jo Henninger journey to Morocco in an attempt to alleviate the tension between them. While on a winding road, David unintentionally strikes and kills a young teen holding a fossil. As they bring the deceased teenager, known as Driss, to their friend Richard Galloway’s house during a celebration, David agrees to report it as an accidental death due to his intoxicated state while driving. The following day, David accompanies Driss’s father and Anouar, their interpreter, back to his home village for his burial.

As Jo stays with Richard, she indulges in hedonistic activities and even engages in an extramarital relationship with one of the guests. During their journey back home with Anouar, David confides in her that he disregarded Jo’s objections and took responsibility for causing Driss’ death by concealing his identification. Later that night, after reuniting at the party, they both depart once most guests have left. While passing by the location where Driss died, they encounter his armed friend who eventually shoots David at Jo’s distress before leaving.
