The Founder (2016)

Directed by John Lee Hancock and written by Robert Siegel, The Founder (2016) is a biographical drama about Ray Kroc. In 1954, Kroc had spent most of his adult life as a salesman, becoming known for his hustle. This has garnered him both admiration and disdain as he peddles products that some consider more novelty than useful. Despite this, his hard work has provided him and his wife Ethel with a comfortable home in Arlington Heights, Illinois. However, Ethel longs for Kroc to devote more time to their relationship instead of constantly being on the road selling five-spindle milkshake makers for Prince Castle. It was during one of these trips that Kroc discovers McDonald’s Restaurant in San Bernardino, California. Impressed with the concept and owned by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald (known as Dick and Mac), Kroc becomes enamored with the fast-food chain after years of dissatisfaction with drive-in restaurants’ food and service.
While most of Ray’s clients would only require a single five-spindle milkshake maker, the McDonald brothers made the unique decision to purchase a total of eight machines for their solitary eatery. With Dick being the driving force behind this idea, the duo completely revamped the traditional drive-in restaurant model by prioritizing high-quality food with a limited menu consisting of popular items such as hamburgers, fries, and sodas. They also placed great emphasis on maintaining consistency in their products, ensuring that customers knew exactly what to expect each time they dined with them. Moreover, they shifted their target market from leisurely teenagers to families and implemented an efficient assembly line production system to guarantee speedy service, with orders being ready in mere seconds. Though they had attempted franchising before, it proved unsuccessful as it resulted in them losing control over crucial elements that had contributed to the triumph of their San Bernardino location.
