The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990 — 1996)
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990–1996), a popular American sitcom, was created by Andy and Susan Borowitz for NBC and originally aired from 1990 to 1996. The show follows the fictionalized version of Will Smith, a street-smart teenager from West Philadelphia who is sent to live with his wealthy relatives in Los Angeles. The clash between his lifestyle and that of his upper-class family makes for entertaining episodes. Considered Smith’s breakthrough into television, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air ran for 148 episodes over six seasons on NBC. In November 2020, a reunion special/revisited show featuring the original cast premiered on HBO Max. Fans were also treated to Bel-Air, a more dramatic reimagining based on a fan film with Will as its executive producer and now streaming on Peacock since February 13th, 2022.
The show’s theme song and opening sequence introduce the premise of the story. Will Smith plays a street-smart teenager, who grew up in West Philadelphia. While playing basketball on the streets, Will accidentally provokes a group of gang members, which scares his mother into sending him to live with his wealthy aunt and uncle in Bel Air, Los Angeles. The clash between Will’s working class background and the upper class lifestyle of his family – including his strict uncle Phil, fair-minded aunt Vivian, their children (spoiled Hilary, pompous Carlton, impressionable Ashley, and baby Nicky), and sarcastic butler Geoffrey – leads to many humorous situations.
