The Frighteners (1996)
The supernatural comedy horror film, The Frighteners (1996), was directed by Peter Jackson and co-written with Fran Walsh. In 1990, Debra Bannister dies in a car accident, causing her husband Frank to abandon his architecture career and leave their unfinished dream house. Struck with the ability to see ghosts after the accident, Frank befriends three: Cyrus, a street gangster from the 1970s; Stuart, a nerd from the 1950s; and The Judge, an Old West gunslinger. These ghosts help Frank in his business of exorcising haunted houses for a fee. Unfortunately, many locals view him as a con man. When Frank cons health advocate Ray Lynskey and his physician wife Lucy, Ray suddenly passes away from a heart attack. As Frank investigates further, he discovers that there is an entity resembling the Grim Reaper who has been targeting people with numbers on their foreheads – similar to what Debra had when she passed away.
Frank’s gift for predicting the killings leads to suspicion from both the police and FBI agent Milton Dammers, who adamantly believes Frank is the culprit. The press also joins in, with newspaper editor Magda Rees-Jones publicly attacking him. Following his failed attempt to save Rees-Jones from the Grim Reaper, Frank is accused of her murder. Meanwhile, Lucy takes on the investigation and finds herself targeted by the Grim Reaper while visiting Frank in prison. They manage to escape thanks to Cyrus and Stuart, although both suffer dissolution in the process. In a bid to help Frank have a near-death experience, Lucy induces hypothermia and administers barbiturates to stop his heart. However, their plans are interrupted when Dammers abducts Lucy and reveals that he was once a victim of the notorious Manson Family.
