The American thriller film, The Frozen Ground (2013), marks Scott Walker’s directorial debut. In a 1983 Anchorage motel room, Cindy Paulson, a 17-year-old prostitute, is found handcuffed and screaming for help. She is saved by an Anchorage Police Department patrol officer who takes her to the hospital and collects her clothes for a rape kit. However, Paulson’s credibility is questioned due to her profession and false age. As a result, the detectives dismiss her claims against Robert Hansen, the man she identified as her abductor. Despite evidence supporting Hansen’s innocence, the APD patrol officer is dismayed by their lack of action and covertly shares details of the case with the Alaska State Troopers.
At the same time, state trooper Jack Halcombe responds to a call about a female body found in the bush. As he delves into the case, he discovers a connection to other missing girls who disappeared after responding to what they believed were legitimate photo opportunities. Through insider information from an APD officer, Halcombe links these cases to Paulson’s experience and slowly builds a profile of Hansen. During their conversation, Paulson reveals how she was held captive by Hansen and managed to escape when he attempted to transfer her onto his bush plane. Meanwhile, in Anchorage, Debbie Peters is lured into an RV by a man claiming to be conducting a photo shoot. Later that evening, Hansen enjoys a quiet dinner at home while his wife and children are away. He nonchalantly ignores Peters, who is chained up in his trophy room as one of his captives.
