The Funeral (1996)
The American crime-drama film, The Funeral (1996), directed by Abel Ferrara, centers around the death of one of the three violent Tempio brothers. As his brothers Chez and Ray mourn his passing, they each cope with their grief in contrasting ways – Ray with a cool and calculating demeanor while Chez’s hot temper flares. Flashbacks reveal that Johnny, although a criminal, had a softer side and was influenced by communist meetings he attended as a spy. The primary suspect in his murder is rival gangster Gaspare Spoglia. Determined to seek revenge, both Ray and Chez make a vow to avenge their brother’s death. However, not everyone agrees – Ray’s wife Jeanette opposes the idea due to the potential for violence it may bring while Chez’s wife Clara struggles to deal with her husband’s obsession. In an attempt to gather information, Ray abducts Gaspare for interrogation and takes him to view Johnny’s body.
Despite his initial belief of Gaspare’s guilt, Ray begins to doubt it after hearing Gaspare explain that gangsters believe wounds on corpses will bleed in front of their killer. Hence, the perpetrator would refuse to willingly confront the deceased victim. Gaspare, on the other hand, does not shy away from being near the victim and can be ruled out as a suspect. Despite this, Ray orders his men to eliminate Gaspare at a later time. It is later revealed that it was not rival gang members who killed Johnny, but a man seeking retribution for Johnny’s alleged rape of his girlfriend. Ray’s team manages to identify the killer by tracing the car he used during the crime. Under pressure from Ray, the murderer admits seeking vengeance due to Johnny previously attacking him in front of his significant other and peers.
