The Fury (1978)
The Fury (1978), an American supernatural horror thriller film directed by Brian De Palma, follows ex-government agent Peter Sandza and his psychic son Robin as they encounter Ben Childress, Peter’s former colleague from the agency. Despite Sandza’s plans to leave their old lives behind and return to the United States, Childress objects and stages a terrorist attack as a cover-up for kidnapping Robin in order to protect him. Though Peter manages to survive the attack and escape while badly injured, he is unable to save his son. Meanwhile in Chicago, high-school student Gillian Bellaver discovers her own psychic abilities during an in-class demonstration, including telekinesis and extra-sensory perception. However, these powers prove dangerous when triggered by physical contact or provocation.
In an effort to control her powers, Gillian volunteers to attend the Paragon Institute – a live-in research facility specializing in studying adolescent psychics. While Peter successfully tracks his son to Chicago, he must also dodge Childress’s agents. He then reunites with Hester, who works as a nurse for Paragon. Hester reveals to Peter that Gillian has valuable information. Specifically, the director of Paragon is working with PSI, a secret organization run by Childress. PSI’s mission is to capture psychic children and use their abilities for the government’s benefit. However, they control and manipulate these young psychics through brainwashing and getting rid of their families. As Gillian’s powers strengthen, she starts having visions of the Institute mistreating Robin, who has been trying to escape. Eventually, she connects with him telepathically.
