The American mystery thriller film, The Game (1997), directed by David Fincher, follows the story of Nicholas Van Orton – a self-absorbed investment banker in San Francisco. On his 48th birthday, Nicholas meets with his estranged younger brother, Conrad, who surprises him with a unique gift – a voucher for a ‘game’ offered by Consumer Recreation Services (CRS). Despite being skeptical at first, Nicholas decides to apply for the game at the CRS office. However, the extensive psychological and physical examinations he must undergo only serve to irritate him. Eventually, he is informed that his application has been rejected. Upon returning home one evening, Nicholas finds a wooden clown outside and later discovers a hidden camera inside. He also receives a mysterious message from a distorted television screen that warns him not to try and figure out the object of the game.

As more and more strange occurrences unfold, Nicholas initially dismisses them as elaborate pranks by CRS. However, his perspective shifts when these events start to have serious consequences for his business, reputation, and safety. These incidents are further compounded by the trauma of witnessing his father’s suicide as a child. In the midst of this chaos, Nicholas crosses paths with Christine, a waitress who gets caught up in the turmoil as well. Eventually, Conrad, Nicholas’ brother, shows up to apologize for his involvement with CRS and reveals that he too has been targeted by them. A heated argument ensues between the brothers and Conrad ends up fleeing, leaving Nicholas to deal with the situation alone.
