The Gentlemen (2019)

The Gentlemen (2019) is an action comedy film written, directed and produced by Guy Ritchie, who also co-developed the story with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies. The editor of the Daily Print tabloid, Big Dave, feeling slighted by cannabis baron Mickey Pearson at a party, hires private detective Fletcher to look into Pearson’s connections with Lord Pressfield. Laura, Pressfield’s daughter and a heroin addict, becomes a focus of Fletcher’s investigation. In an attempt to profit from his findings (which he has turned into a screenplay titled Bush), Fletcher approaches Pearson’s right-hand man Raymond with an offer of £20 million. Despite his humble beginnings in the U.S., Pearson earned a scholarship to Oxford where he started selling marijuana before dropping out and building his criminal empire. Now looking to retire peacefully with his wife Rosalind, Pearson plans to sell his business for £400m to American billionaire Matthew Berger. During a tour of one of his cannabis labs located under the estates of wealthy landlords struggling financially, Pearson shows Berger the extent of his operation.
Pearson is approached by Dry Eye, an underboss for Chinese gangster Lord George, and offered money to buy out his business. However, Pearson turns down the offer. This attracts the attention of ‘The Toddlers’, a group of amateur MMA fighters and aspiring YouTubers, who break into Pearson’s lab and steal his marijuana as well as filming a rap video of their actions. Their trainer, ‘Coach’, is horrified and orders them to delete the video. In response to the raid, Pearson takes precautions by moving his cannabis plants out of the estates. Pressfield also asks him to bring Laura home. Raymond retrieves her from a council estate where she lives with other addicts but unfortunately, in a brawl with her flatmates, one of Raymond’s men accidentally kills Aslan, a young Russian. Laura is then returned to her parents but ultimately succumbs to an overdose.
