The Get Down (2016–2017), a creation of Baz Luhrmann and Stephen Adly Guirgis, is an American musical drama that premiered on Netflix on August 12, 2016. Sadly, it was cancelled after just one season. The show is set in the 1970s in New York City’s Bronx borough and tells the story of a group of teens who witness the rise of hip-hop and disco music. At the start of each episode, we see MC Books, a renowned artist, performing for a large crowd in 1996. Using rap as his medium, he recaps previous events and sets the stage for what’s to come. Throughout the series, real footage and newscasts from the 1970s are intercut with the narrative. In part one, we are introduced to Zeke (also known as young MC Books), a talented poet who has recently lost his parents and now lives with his aunt Wanda. He soon crosses paths with Shaolin Fantastic, an aspiring DJ and graffiti artist.
Zeke, along with his friends, joins forces with Zeke’s pals to form ‘The Get Down Brothers’, united by their shared aspiration to conquer the city as successful musicians. Mylene, Zeke’s longtime crush, dreams of becoming a disco sensation and escaping the Bronx. However, she faces several challenges such as her father, who disapproves of secular music due to his role as a pastor. The show portrays various gangs and gangsters in the Bronx, including Fat Annie and her son Cadillac. It also sheds light on the poverty and violence endured by the locals during the 1970s.
In part two, set in 1978, the group members enter adulthood and navigate their future in the music industry. Zeke is presented with a tough decision: choosing between his love for Mylene or his passion for music. While Mylene holds a special place in his heart, music is also an integral part of his life. As Mylene rises in the music world, she wants Zeke by her side but doubts his dedication towards their shared dream. Meanwhile, Shaolin and the crew focus on creating music and making money. A disturbing incident involving a dead body in Shaolin’s car shakes them up and raises questions about their
