The Getaway (1994)
Roger Donaldson’s film, The Getaway (1994), is an American action thriller based on Jim Thompson’s novel of the same name. The screenplay was written by Walter Hill and Amy Holden Jones. As Doc McCoy and his wife Carol practice shooting, Rudy approaches them with a proposal to break a Mexican drug lord’s nephew out of jail for a payment of $300,000. The job is successful, but it turns out that the drug lord wanted his nephew freed in order to kill him. However, when Rudy sees police cars arriving, he abandons Doc and escapes in the getaway plane. After spending a year in a Mexican prison, Doc arranges for Carol to go to mob boss Jack Benyon, who is searching for skilled individuals to rob an Arizona dog track. In exchange for sexual favors from Carol, Benyon agrees to secure Doc’s release from prison.
After arriving at their designated meeting spot, Doc greets the hired men provided by Benyon. One of them is Rudy, who appears to be accompanied by an inexperienced Hansen. Upon introduction, Rudy offers his hand in goodwill and apologizes for any previous misunderstandings. However, before he has the chance to finish his sentence, Doc retaliates with a punch and a stern warning to never deceive him again. At the race track where the plan was set in motion, Hansen’s nerves get the better of him and he ends up fatally shooting a guard who pulls out a gun on them. In order to escape unnoticed with the sizable loot amounting to one million dollars, they resort to creating chaos with a gas truck explosion as distraction. As per their original plan, Doc and Carol were supposed meet up with Rudy and Hansen afterwards to divide the money among themselves.
