The Getaway (1972)
Based on the eponymous novel by Jim Thompson, The Getaway (1972) is an American action thriller film directed by Sam Peckinpah. Despite serving four years of his ten-year sentence for armed robbery, Carter ‘Doc’ McCoy is denied parole from a Texas prison. Desperate to gain his freedom, he urges his wife Carol to seek assistance from Jack Beynon – a corrupt businessman and member of the parole board in San Antonio. Thanks to Beynon’s intervention, Doc is released under the condition that he orchestrate a bank heist with two accomplices: Rudy Butler and Frank Jackson. While the robbery initially goes according to plan, things take a disastrous turn when Frank fatally shoots a security guard. In retaliation, Rudy kills Frank during their escape. However, at their designated meeting spot, Doc outsmarts Rudy’s betrayal by shooting him multiple times.
With $500,000 in hand, Doc and Carol flee while Rudy barely survives due to wearing a concealed bulletproof vest. During the meeting between Doc and Beynon, Carol sneaks in with the intention of killing Doc. However, she ends up turning her weapon towards Beynon and taking his life instead. Doc, still reeling from Beynon’s betrayal, realizes that Carol slept with him in order to secure his parole. This revelation causes tension between the couple as they quickly gather their money and flee towards El Paso. Meanwhile, Rudy seeks medical treatment from rural veterinarian Harold Clinton after being injured. He then proceeds to kidnap the doctor and his wife Fran to assist in his pursuit of Doc and Carol.
