The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942), directed by Erle C. Kenton and featuring Cedric Hardwicke, Lon Chaney Jr., and Bela Lugosi, is an American horror film. The villagers in Frankenstein’s town believe they are cursed and attribute all their misfortunes to Frankenstein’s creation. As a result, the Mayor allows them to demolish his castle. However, Ygor discovers that the monster has been freed from his sulfuric grave due to the explosions. Although weakened, the sulfur has also preserved him. While escaping with Ygor, the monster is struck by lightning. In order to help him regain his strength, Ygor seeks out Ludwig – Henry Frankenstein’s second son – who is now a respected doctor in Visaria along with his colleagues Dr. Kettering and Dr. Bohmer (previously Ludwig’s teacher but now his envious assistant).
Upon their arrival in Visaria, Ygor and the monster form an unlikely bond with a young girl named Cloestine Hussman. When Cloestine’s ball lands on a roof, the monster offers to retrieve it, but unfortunately ends up killing two villagers who try to intervene. After being requested to return Cloestine by her father, Herr Hussman, the monster is apprehended by the police. The town prosecutor, Erik Ernst, seeks Ludwig’s help in examining the captured creature. However, Ygor beats him to the punch by revealing that the giant is actually the infamous monster. Desperate for a cure for its body and mind, Ygor turns to Ludwig for assistance. But when Ludwig refuses, Ygor resorts to blackmailing him with the knowledge of his heritage.
