The Gift (2000)
The Gift (2000) is the American paranormal thriller film, directed by Sam Raimi and written by Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson, centers around widow Annie Wilson, a clairvoyant in Brixton, Georgia. She has visions of her grandmother and uses her abilities to help others. After Jessica King, the fiancée of the school principal Wayne Collins, goes missing, Annie receives a vision that she has been killed and thrown into the pond. Despite initial skepticism from local sheriff Pearl Johnson, Annie informs him of her vision and he begins to search for Jessica’s body in the pond on property owned by Donnie and Valerie Barksdale. Donnie had previously threatened Annie due to her advising Valerie to leave him because of his abusive behavior towards her. Eventually, Jessica’s body is found in the pond and Donnie is arrested for her murder.
While driving Annie home, her friend Buddy Cole unexpectedly starts crying. She offers him a washcloth that once belonged to her husband. After wiping his face, Buddy holds onto the cloth and doesn’t return it. Through tears, he confides in Annie about his troubled relationship with his father. However, Annie is too distracted to fully listen. Later that night, Buddy’s mother reaches out to Annie for assistance after Buddy has restrained his father to a chair and set him on fire. It is eventually exposed that Buddy’s father was abusive towards him when he was younger. As a result, Buddy is apprehended and taken to a mental health facility. At the subsequent trial of Donnie, who had an affair with Jessica, it emerges that he is guilty of murdering her and is sentenced to prison. However, more visions come to Annie, revealing Donnie’s innocence and the presence of another individual who wants her dead.
