The Gingerbread Man (1998)
The American legal thriller film The Gingerbread Man (1998) was directed by Robert Altman and adapted from a rejected John Grisham manuscript. Rick Magruder, a divorced lawyer known for his shady tactics and defending criminals, celebrates another courtroom win at a party held by his firm. As he becomes increasingly intoxicated, he crosses paths with Mallory Doss, a waitress who has misplaced her car. Rick offers to drive her home, where her father Dixon Doss has already parked the vehicle. The two argue about Mallory’s mistreatment by her father before she carelessly undresses in front of Rick and they spend the night together.
The following day, Mallory requests that Rick take legal action against her father due to his hazardous actions. In light of their newly formed relationship, Rick consents and ultimately succeeds in getting Dixon prosecuted with assistance from his team, including investigator Clyde Pell. During the trial, Mallory’s ex-husband Pete Randle also testifies about Dixon’s unstable behavior. Despite Dixon’s claims of falsified and exaggerated charges, the judge orders him to a mental institution. As he is being removed, Dixon tries to attack Magruder and vows revenge. With her father now institutionalized, Magruder and Mallory continue their romance. However, not long after, Dixon manages to escape from the facility.
