Directed by David Fincher and written by Steven Zaillian, it follows journalist Mikael Blomkvist in Stockholm as he deals with the consequences of a libel suit against businessman Hans-Erik Wennerström. To resolve this issue, wealthy Henrik Vanger offers Blomkvist a unique task: investigating the 40-year-old disappearance of his grandniece Harriet, who is believed to have been murdered. Each year on his birthday, Vanger receives a pressed flower from Harriet’s presumed killer, leading him to believe he is being taunted. Blomkvist moves into a cottage on the Vanger family estate on Hedestad Island to begin his investigation.
Lisbeth Salander is a private investigator and skilled hacker who has been targeted by her court-assigned guardian, Nils Bjurman. Bjurman wields power over Salander’s finances and manipulates her into unwanted sexual acts by threatening to have her committed to a mental institution. During one encounter, Bjurman restrains Salander to his bed without realizing she is recording the event. Taking advantage of this evidence, Salander later incapacitates Bjurman and forces him to sign over control of her finances while also cutting off all contact with her. Meanwhile, journalist Mikael Blomkvist delves into the history of the Vanger family, whose members were largely sympathetic to Nazi beliefs during World War II.
