The Goldfinch (2019)

Directed by John Crowley, the American drama film The Goldfinch (2019) showcases Peter Straughan’s adaptation of Donna Tartt’s 2013 novel of the same name. Following the tragedy at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art where thirteen-year-old Theodore Decker’s mother is killed in a bombing, Theo is urged by a dying man to take a painting—The Goldfinch—and his engraved ring. He is then placed into foster care with the Barbours, the family of his best friend Andy, and forms a close bond with Mrs. Barbour who supports his interest in antiques and art. As it turns out, Theo and his mother were meant to meet with Theo’s school principal on that fateful day due to accusations of smoking cigarettes alongside classmate Tom Cable. However, they arrive early and decide to visit the museum instead, leading to Theo blaming himself for his mother’s death.
Theo finds the antiques store owned by James ‘Hobie’ Hobart, whose partner, Welton ‘Welty’ Blackwell (the man who gave Theo the ring to return), had recently passed away at the museum. Hobie kindly allows Theo to visit Pippa, Welty’s niece who was injured in the explosion. The two quickly bond before Pippa is sent to live with her aunt in Texas. Andy casually mentions that his parents are thinking about adopting Theo. However, Theo’s father Larry, who claims to be newly sober, suddenly shows up with his girlfriend Xandra and plans to move Theo to Las Vegas. Despite this disruption, Theo manages to bring The Goldfinch with him and keeps it hidden. In Las Vegas, he befriends a Ukrainian classmate named Boris, who introduces him to drugs and alcohol. Meanwhile, Larry gets into trouble with gambling debts and tries unsuccessfully to have Theo transfer his education fund into a bank account.
