The Good Shepherd (2006)
The American spy film, The Good Shepherd (2006), was both produced and directed by Robert De Niro. Following the disastrous end of the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961, suspicions arise about a potential ‘mole’ within the CIA. Senior officer Edward Wilson returns home to find a photograph and audio tapes that have been tampered with, leaving some details unclear. Flashing back to his time at Yale University in 1939, Wilson is invited to join the Skull and Bones fraternity where he reveals that he discovered but never read his father’s suicide note. His father, an admiral who had been considered for Secretary of the Navy, was accused of disloyalty. FBI agent Sam Murach recruits Wilson to investigate his poetry professor Frederick’s ties to Nazi sympathizers. Once exposed and forced to resign, Frederick’s actions impact Wilson personally as he begins dating Laura, a deaf Yale student.
As World War II is announced in Europe, Laura asks Wilson to sleep with her but ultimately stops at the last minute. In 1940, at a party, Wilson meets Margaret ‘Clover’ Russell, John’s sister. He is also introduced to General Bill Sullivan who offers him a job in foreign intelligence and informs him that the US will soon have to enter the war. Clover, Senator Russell’s daughter and leader of the America First Committee, catches Edward’s attention and he gives in to her persistent advances. During a date with Laura on the beach, John approaches Edward and reveals that Clover is pregnant. He suggests that Edward should marry her. Laura overhears their conversation and walks away. On the day of Edward and Clover’s wedding, he receives orders to leave for London where he reunites with Dr. Fredericks, who had previously recommended him for counter-espionage training as a British intelligence agent.
