The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
The comedy-drama film, The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), is written and directed by Wes Anderson. A teenage girl pays a visit to the monument of the author who wrote ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ and finds inspiration in his story. This author was inspired to write the book during his stay at the once-luxurious hotel located in the European mountainous country formerly known as Zubrowka. Despite its current dilapidated state in 1968, the hotel holds a special place in the heart of its owner, Mr. Zero Moustafa. He shares with the author how he came to acquire it and why he continues to keep it open despite not making any profit. Zero’s tale takes us back to 1932 when the hotel was thriving under the guidance of M.Gustave, a dedicated concierge, and young immigrant lobby boy.
Gustave’s main goal was to please, catering to the whims of his guests, particularly the affluent blonde women. The central figure of this tale is Madame D., also known as Madame Céline Villeneuve Desgoffe-und-Taxis, along with her cunning son Dmitri. The narrative centers on the inheritance of a valuable painting called “Boy with Apple” to Gustave and the suspicious circumstances surrounding Madame D.’s death. Initially, Gustave is wrongly blamed for her demise while Zero, along with his girlfriend Agatha – a baker’s assistant – and others work tirelessly to clear his name. Meanwhile, Dmitri will stop at nothing to claim what he believes is rightfully his: the painting.
