The Gray Man (2022)
The Gray Man (2022) is an American action thriller directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Mark Greaney. In 2003, senior CIA official Fitzroy visits a prisoner who had been convicted of killing his abusive father to protect his brother. Eight years later, Fitzroy offers the man his freedom in exchange for working as an assassin in the Sierra program. In 2021, code-named “Sierra Six,” he is on a mission in Bangkok with fellow agent Dani Miranda to eliminate a target suspected of selling national security secrets. However, during the mission, he is unable to carry out the task without harming innocent civilians and resorts to attacking the target directly. The dying target reveals that he was also part of the Sierra program as Sierra Four and gives Six an encrypted drive exposing corruption within the CIA’s top ranks.
By kidnapping Fitzroy’s niece Claire, Hansen manipulates Fitzroy into authorizing Six’s murder by an extraction team. Despite this, Six manages to eliminate the team and flee. As a result of his failure, Carmichael assigns his subordinate Suzanne Brewer to keep Hansen in check. In Croatia, Hansen holds Claire captive in a mansion where he coordinates his operations. In an attempt to capture Six, Hansen offers a reward for his capture which attracts mercenaries and contract killers. To retrieve crucial information about Claire’s pacemaker, Six travels to Vienna where he seeks out Laszlo Sosa. However, Sosa betrays him for the bounty placed on Six’s head. Miraculously escaping just as Hansen and his team arrive, Six is rescued by Miranda who has been struggling with her damaged reputation following a mission in Bangkok. While initially planning to turn him over to salvage her career at the CIA, Six convinces Miranda to drive him to Cahill’s apartment in Prague where she decodes crucial information from a drive that exposes the extent of Carmichael’s corruption and his connection to a mysterious benefactor operating within a shadow government.
