The Great Gatsby (2013)
The film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, The Great Gatsby (2013), follows the story of World War I veteran Nick Carraway as he recounts his encounter with the enigmatic Jay Gatsby to his doctor while receiving treatment at a psychiatric hospital in December 1929. Encouraged by his doctor to channel his passion for writing, Nick begins documenting the events that led him to New York seven years prior. He had moved from the Midwest and abandoned writing to rent a cottage in West Egg near Gatsby’s extravagant mansion. One evening he has dinner with his cousin Daisy Buchanan and her overbearing husband Tom at their lavish East Egg estate. Daisy attempts to set Nick up with another guest, famous golfer Jordan Baker.
Upon Nick’s return home, Gatsby can be seen standing near the harbor, reaching towards a green light emanating from the Buchanans’ dock. Tom subsequently brings Nick to the Valley of Ashes, located between West Egg and the city, and meets up with his mistress Myrtle Wilson at her husband George’s garage. Shortly after, Nick receives an invitation to one of Gatsby’s lavish parties. There, he reunites with Jordan and is introduced to Gatsby himself. As they make their way to Manhattan for lunch, Gatsby reveals that he is an Oxford graduate and war hero from a wealthy family in the Midwest. During their outing, Gatsby brings Nick to a speakeasy where they meet his business associate Meyer Wolfsheim.
