The Great Gatsby (1974) is an American film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel of the same name, directed by Jack Clayton. Writer Nick Carraway visits his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom at their East Egg mansion, where he discovers their troubled marriage and Tom’s affair with a woman in New York. Nick resides in a modest cottage in West Egg, next to an enigmatic tycoon named Gatsby, who throws lavish parties at his estate. During one of these gatherings, Tom introduces Nick to his mistress Myrtle, who is married to an auto mechanic named George Wilson. Myrtle’s husband needs to buy a car from Tom, but Tom only brought her back to his apartment in the city where he hits her when she brings up Daisy’s name.

After returning to Long Island, Daisy suggests that Nick meets her friend Jordan, a professional golfer. They both attend a party at Gatsby’s house where Nick is later invited for a private meeting with Gatsby himself. During the meeting, Gatsby asks Nick to join him for lunch the next day. While at lunch, Nick is introduced to Meyer Wolfsheim, Gatsby’s business partner and a Jewish gangster and gambler who was responsible for rigging the 1919 World Series. The following day, Jordan visits Nick at work and asks him to invite Daisy over to his house so that Gatsby can meet her. Much to Daisy’s surprise, Gatsby shows up during their lunch and it is then revealed that the two of them were once lovers.
