The Great Wall (2016)
The film, The Great Wall (2016), was directed by Zhang Yimou and written by Carlo Bernard, Doug Miro, Tony Gilroy, Max Brooks, Edward Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz. In a distant time period, a group of European mercenaries are on a quest in the Far East to find valuable black powder. During their journey, they are ambushed by an unknown creature which is killed by one of the mercenaries named William. Eventually, William and Tovar are taken captive by the Nameless Order, a local army protecting the Great Wall. The Nameless Order reveals that the creature is called a Tao Tei and only attacks every sixty years. The death of the creature at the hands of William signals an impending attack from more Tao Tei. These creatures survive by gathering food for their Queen’s nourishment.
William and Tovar, two mercenaries searching for black powder, were not explicitly informed but learned from Ballard, another westerner at the Wall, that they would be treated well by the Nameless Order. However, they were also informed that leaving was not an option as the Order protected the Wall’s secrets. As the Tao Tei launched their attack, the Nameless Order enacted a strategic defense from their fortress. William and Tovar had different reactions to this: Tovar saw it as a chance to escape with as much black powder as possible while William found a new purpose in life through Commander Lin Mae’s teachings on trust. It was uncertain if anyone would survive regardless of their chosen path, causing a divide between William and Tovar. This led them down conflicting paths.
