The American biographical war comedy drama film, The Greatest Beer Run Ever (2022), is directed and co-written by Peter Farrelly, based on the book by John ‘Chickie’ Donohue and Joanna Molloy. In 1968, Chickie, a former Marine turned slacking merchant seaman, resides in Inwood, New York City with his family. He often frequents a bar run by the cynical old man known as “The Colonel”. While Chickie’s sister Christine vehemently opposes the Vietnam War, both Chickie and their father served in the past. After attending the funeral of their friend Johnny who was killed in action, Chickie and his friends are faced with another tragedy when Tommy Minogue, whom Chickie had convinced to join the draft, goes missing.
Following the funeral, Chickie and Red encounter Christine during an anti-war demonstration. They get into a brief physical altercation with some protestors before returning to the bar to discuss ways to boost their serving friends’ morale. While there, Chickie proposes the idea of personally delivering beers to his friends in South Vietnam. However, the next day, he seems to change his mind. Despite Christine’s warnings, when Tommy’s mother suggests Chickie take her son a set of rosary beads if he finds him, he ultimately embarks on the trip. Armed with a duffle bag filled with Pabst Blue Ribbon cans, Chickie signs on to a ship bound for Saigon in search of military policeman Tommy Collins.
