The Grey (2011)
In the survival thriller film The Grey (2011), co-written, produced and directed by Joe Carnahan, John Ottway is a sharpshooter protecting staff from frequent grey wolf attacks at a remote Alaskan oil facility. After losing his wife to a terminal illness, Ottway becomes depressed and indifferent towards life. On his final day of work, he contemplates suicide before boarding a flight back to Anchorage with his coworkers. Unfortunately, the plane crashes in an icy wilderness and Ottway must survive alongside John Diaz, Jerome Talget, Pete Henwick, Todd Flannery, Jackson Burke and Dwayne Hernandez. Tragically, Hernandez is killed by the wolves during their time stranded in the wreckage of the plane.
After discovering his body in the morning, Ottway explains that the wolves feel threatened by the survivors and suggests they seek safety in the nearby forest. Not anticipating a rescue, the group agrees to leave. Ottway takes charge and leads them south. Sadly, Flannery strays from the group and is fatally attacked by a pack of hungry wolves. As night falls, they are once again ambushed and must start multiple campfires to protect themselves. In a state of extreme stress, Diaz pulls out a knife and threatens Ottway. However, before things escalate, Ottway disarms him. Unfortunately, a lone wolf charges at Diaz but the group is able to kill it and use it as sustenance for their survival.
