The Guard (2011), a buddy cop comedy from Ireland, is written and directed by John Michael McDonagh. It follows the story of Sergeant Gerry Boyle, an officer with the Garda Síochána in the Connemara district. Boyle is known for his brash and aggressive demeanor, often turning to drugs and alcohol while on duty. However, he also has a softer side and demonstrates care for his sick mother, Eileen. Along with his new colleague Aidan McBride, Boyle is tasked with investigating a murder that seems to be linked to an occult serial killer. During this time, he attends a briefing led by American FBI agent Wendell Everett who has been sent to help the Garda take down four Irish drug traffickers headed by Francis Sheehy-Skeffington.

Interestingly enough, Boyle recognizes one of these suspects as the victim of the murder he and McBride had been investigating. While on duty, McBride is fatally shot by Sheehy and his companions – Clive Cornell and Liam O’Leary. Upon learning of her husband’s disappearance, Gabriela seeks help from Boyle who agrees to investigate the matter. The by-the-book Everett suggests joining forces with the unorthodox Boyle in their pursuit for Sheehy and his associates. During his search, Everett comes across Irish-speaking locals who feign not understanding English to avoid interaction with outsiders. On his return journey from the hotel, Boyle notices McBride’s Garda car at a known ‘suicide hotspot’ along the coast but finds it hard to believe that McBride committed suicide.
