The Guardian (2006)
The Guardian (2006), an American action-adventure drama film directed by Andrew Davis, begins with a legend recounted by those who have faced perilous situations at sea. This legend speaks of a mysterious force known as the Guardian, which supposedly helps lost individuals reach the surface and hold on until help arrives. Ben Randall is a renowned rescue swimmer in the United States Coast Guard’s Aviation Survival Technician (AST) program. However, his dedication to his job has caused his marriage to fall apart. During one rescue mission, Ben experiences tragedy when his team crashes into the ocean in their HH-60J Jayhawk helicopter. He is haunted by guilt after losing his close friend and colleague Chief Petty Officer Carl Billings. In order to cope with this trauma, Ben is transferred to teach at the Coast Guard AST training school. His skills and experience quickly earn him legendary status among the students for his numerous successful rescues.
One student in the Coast Guard training program stands out – Jake Fischer. He turned down scholarships from every Ivy League school to enlist, despite being a top high school competitive swimmer. During the initial weeks of training, Jake starts a casual relationship with Emily Thomas, a local school teacher. As training progresses, most students drop out and advanced instruction begins. But one day, Jake shows up late and his entire class is punished by their instructor, Ben. Determined to make Jake quit, Ben believes him to be lazy and unmotivated. However, as time passes, Ben witnesses Jake’s persistence and dedication. Jake shares with Emily that he has beaten some of Ben’s old records while they meet at a bar. The bartender, who happens to be a friend of Ben’s, tells Jake about the time when Ben heroically saved every victim from a burning hospital ship full of invalid patients.
