The American psychological thriller film, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992), directed by Curtis Hanson, follows housewife Claire Bartel in Seattle. She is happily married and pregnant with her second child when she experiences a traumatic event at her routine check-up with new obstetrician Dr. Victor Mott. Claire confides in her husband Michael and they decide to report Dr. Mott to the state medical board. As a result, four other women come forward with similar accusations against Dr. Mott and charges are brought against him. Fearing arrest, Dr. Mott takes his own life, leaving behind a pregnant widow who learns that all of their assets have been frozen due to the lawsuits. She also discovers that he voided his life insurance contract by committing suicide, resulting in the loss of their luxurious home.

The stress takes its toll on Mrs. Mott, causing her to go into pre-term labor, lose the baby, and undergo an emergency hysterectomy. During her recovery, she comes across a news story featuring Claire as the first woman to come forward with allegations against her husband. Now, six months later, Claire has welcomed a baby boy named Joey and has successfully built her own personal greenhouse. To assist with household tasks and upkeep, she and Michael have brought on Solomon, who happens to have an intellectual disability. Solomon also forms a bond with their young daughter Emma. Meanwhile, in search of a nanny, Claire unknowingly hires Mrs. Mott, who goes by the alias ‘Peyton Flanders’. Mrs. Mott begins a vengeful campaign against Claire within their household, seeking revenge for Claire reporting her husband’s unacceptable actions despite him being her only chance at having children.
