The Hatton Garden Job (2017)
The British crime film, known as The Hatton Garden Job (2017), is based on the real-life events of April 2015. During this time, four experienced thieves carried out a burglary at the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company, located underground in central London. Portrayed by Larry Lamb, 76-year-old Brian Reader takes on the role of Guvnor and leads the operation with his fellow ‘codgers’ Danny Jones, Terry Perkins, and Kenny Collins. Previously convicted in 1975 for routine theft, Reader had also been involved in the infamous Brink’s-Mat robbery of 1983. Using an industrial power drill, the burglars gain entry to the secure premises over a bank holiday weekend through a lift shaft. For two days, they methodically search through numerous deposit boxes before setting off the burglar alarm. Despite this, police do not respond to the alert.
The heist is not discovered until the following week when staff return to work. The newspapers quickly label it as the most significant robbery in English history, with a reported value of up to £200 million. Despite this, the seven-member gang, with a combined age of 448, remains unconvinced. Matthew Goode portrays the mastermind behind the operation, known only as XXX, while Joely Richardson plays Erzebet Zslondos, a glamorous Hungarian mobster who is directing the scheme with her exotic accent and striking wardrobe. In a side plot, Zslondos becomes entangled with DCI Frank Baskin, a corrupt ex-policeman. As they efficiently divide their spoils, the Flying Squad (aka ‘the Sweeney’) of the Metropolitan Police is brought in under the command of DCI Emma Carter.
