The Head (2020 — 2022)
The Head (2020–2024) is a riveting psychological thriller series directed by Jorge Dorado for HBO Asia and Hulu Japan. Set initially in Antarctica, the show’s first season premiered on 12 June 2020 with a second season following on 22 December 2022. The black and white portrait hanging near the stairwell features Norweigan polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen, while another depicts Captain Lawrence Oats, known for his involvement in the Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole with Sir Robert Scott. The end credits feature a song by Tomohisa Yamashita, who also plays Aki in the series. Also featured is Sarandonga by Lolita Flores as the opening song of the first chapter. Filmed in Iceland and the Canary Islands, The Head stars John Lynch, who previously portrayed a scientist on an Antarctic mission in Alien Hunter. In the first episode, viewers catch a glimpse of John Carpenter’s classic film The Thing (1982) being watched by the remaining crew.
Winter has arrived at the South Pole, where the sun will soon be absent for six months. Remaining at the Polaris VI Antarctic Research Station are a select few known as the Winterers, tasked with continuing important research led by renowned biologist Arthur Wilde to combat climate change. However, upon Johan Berg’s return as summer commander, he discovers his entire team is either deceased or unaccounted for. A dangerous perpetrator is on the loose and not only is Annika, Johan’s wife, missing but the sole survivor Maggie is visibly shaken and in need of trust if she wants to find Annika alive.
