The Help (2011)
The Help (2011), a period drama film directed and written by Tate Taylor, is based on Kathryn Stockett’s 2009 novel of the same title. Set in Jackson, Mississippi in 1963, the story follows Aibileen Clark, an African-American domestic worker who works for socialite Elizabeth Leefolt. Aibileen cares for Elizabeth’s two-year-old daughter Mae Mobley as Elizabeth neglects her emotionally. Aibileen’s close friend Minny Jackson also works as a maid for Mrs. Walters and her manipulative daughter Hilly Holbrook, who is known for leading the women’s socialite group. Skeeter Phelan, another friend of Elizabeth and Hilly, is an aspiring writer and recent graduate of Ole Miss who has been rejected by a New York publishing house. While working on a local job writing a housekeeping column, Skeeter becomes increasingly aware of the city’s deep-rooted racism and the mistreatment of maids, including Hilly’s insistence on having separate bathrooms enforced through building codes.
Skeeter’s mother, Charlotte, breaks the news to her that Constantine has quit. Skeeter doesn’t believe her and decides to write a book of interviews with maids to bring attention to their experiences. Shortly after, Hilly fires Minny for using an indoor bathroom during a tornado. In retaliation, Hilly spreads rumors that Minny stole from her, making it impossible for her to find work and leading her daughter to drop out of school and become a maid. Aibileen overhears Celia Foote, who is shunned by the socialites, is looking for a maid. Celia hires Minny without informing her husband Johnny, who was once pursued by Hilly.
