The Highwaymen (2019)

The film The Highwaymen (2019), directed by John Lee Hancock and written by John Fusco, follows the story of notorious criminals Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. In 1934, after two years on the run, they break several associates out of Texas’ Eastham Prison Farm. To track them down, Chief Lee Simmons of the Texas Department of Corrections convinces Governor ‘Ma’ Ferguson to hire retired Texas Ranger Frank Hamer. Despite his reluctance to leave retirement and his wife Gladys, Hamer joins the manhunt after a shootout in Missouri involving the fugitives. He enlists his former partner, Benjamin Maney Gault, despite being unsure of Gault’s sobriety and policing abilities. However, he does not share the driving duties with Gault. Using information from FBI wiretapping on the fugitives’ families, Hamer and Gault determine that Bonnie and Clyde are heading back to Dallas. While keeping watch at Bonnie’s mother’s house, they witness a man throwing a bottle into her yard which is then thrown back by someone inside. The two men see a boy escaping with the bottle.
Despite the Rangers’ belief that the fugitives are elsewhere, the FBI is convinced they are hiding in Brownsville. Hamer and Gault seek assistance from Dallas Sheriff ‘Smoot’ Schmid, who introduces them to Deputy Sheriff Ted Hinton. Hinton, a childhood friend of the pair, is able to positively identify them. The gang’s actions leave two policemen dead in nearby Grapevine. After examining the scene, Hamer and Gault determine that Bonnie has a rabbit with her. Hinton suggests that it may be a gift for a family member. Leaving Texas behind, the Rangers head to Oklahoma where they interview a gas station attendant who openly supports the criminals. With some prompting from Hamer, the man admits to having seen the gang pass through on their way to a migrant camp. There, a local girl confirms their presence. As if on cue, a radio bulletin alerts the rangers to two more fallen officers. Unable to proceed due to jurisdiction constraints, Hamer becomes increasingly frustrated as he drives around the police roadblock in search of another route.
