The American horror film, The Hills Have Eyes (1977), was written, directed, and edited by Wes Craven. During their vacation to Los Angeles, the suburban Carter family is traveling with a trailer towed behind their car. Driving are parents Bob and Ethel, accompanied by teenage children Bobby and Brenda. Also in the car are eldest daughter Lynne, her husband Doug, and their baby daughter Catherine, as well as family dogs Beauty and Beast. While fueling up at Fred’s Oasis in Nevada, Fred warns them to stay on the main road before his truck unexpectedly explodes. Despite Fred’s strange warning, the Carters continue on their journey but are startled by passing aircraft near Nellis Air Force Range. This causes them to skid off the road and crash. As a result of the chaos, Beauty and Beast become agitated and begin barking nonstop towards the hills.

The search for Beauty leads Bobby to discover her lifeless body in the hills. Panicked, he flees and loses consciousness after a fall. Eventually, he makes his way back to Fred’s Oasis where he learns about Jupiter, Fred’s troubled son. During his childhood, Jupiter was responsible for killing their animals and eventually murdered his own sister. In an act of retaliation, Fred attacked Jupiter with a tire iron and left him to die in the hills, but he miraculously survived. Jupiter went on to have children with an alcoholic woman known as Mama, resulting in three sons named Mars, Pluto, and Mercury and an abused daughter named Ruby. Together as a family led by ‘Papa Jupiter’, they survive by preying on travelers and stealing their resources.
