The Homesman (2014)
The Homesman (2014), a Western historical drama film directed by Tommy Lee Jones, takes place in 1850s Midwest. Mary Bee Cuddy, a 31-year-old unmarried teacher from New York seeking new opportunities, owns ample land and is financially secure in the small farming community of Loup in the Nebraska Territory. Despite her appearance of strength and independence, she battles depression and loneliness. When she asks her neighbor Bob Giffen to dinner and proposes marriage, he declines due to her plain looks and assertive nature. Disheartened, he sets off to find a bride elsewhere. As winter brings harsh conditions, three women in the community begin to exhibit symptoms of prairie madness – Arabella Sours who has lost three children to diphtheria, Theoline Belknap who kills her own child after a poor harvest jeopardizes their survival, and Gro Svendsen who endures an abusive marriage and breaks down after her mother’s death.
Reverend Dowd enlists one of the husbands to accompany the women east to the Lady’s Aid Society Methodist Church in Hebron, Iowa, where they provide care for the mentally ill. However, Vester, who is Theoline’s husband, declines to participate in the lottery to determine who will escort them. Cuddy steps up in his place and is chosen by chance. As she gets ready for the journey, she encounters George Briggs, a claim jumper who had stolen Bob Giffen’s land while he was away and is now left with a noose around his neck on horseback. Feeling uneasy about traveling alone, Cuddy decides to release him under one condition – that he helps her escort the women. But George hesitates and insists on his freedom to leave at any point. To convince him, Cuddy promises to send $300 ahead of their arrival in Iowa, but she secretly keeps it with her.
