The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018)
The American fantasy comedy film, The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018), directed by Eli Roth, is based on John Bellairs’ novel of the same name from 1973. After losing his parents in a car accident in 1955, ten-year-old Lewis Barnavelt moves to New Zebedee, Michigan to live with his Uncle Jonathan. His possessions now consist only of a Magic 8-Ball and family photo. Shortly after arriving at his new home, he meets Florence Zimmerman, Jonathan’s neighbor and closest friend. In the night, Lewis hears a ticking noise inside the walls and begins exploring the house. He stumbles upon Jonathan wielding an ax and breaking down a wall, which frightens him and causes him to flee. As he runs away, he encounters various household objects that have come to life. Jonathan then reveals that he is a warlock and Florence is a witch. It turns out that the previous homeowners were Isaac Izard (an estranged friend of Jonathan’s who was traumatized during WWII) and his cruel wife Selena.
Before they died, Isaac and Selena had hidden a clock within the walls of their house. Since then, Jonathan has been searching for the clock and its purpose. Despite Jonathan’s warnings, Lewis begins to teach himself magic. At his new school, he meets Tarby Corrigan, who becomes his friend during Tarby’s campaign for class president. However, when Tarby becomes president, he abandons Lewis. During a dream visit from his mother, Lewis expresses his disappointment in Tarby’s betrayal. She suggests using a forbidden spell from a book to impress Tarby. On Halloween night, Lewis performs necromancy in a cemetery and accidentally summons Isaac’s ghost from his grave. Later on, Lewis sees Isaac in a window at Mrs. Hanchett’s house. He ‘saves’ her from Isaac and brings her to Jonathan’s house across the street. But before he can find Jonathan, Isaac appears at the door and reveals that Mrs. Hanchett is actually Selena in disguise.
