The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) is an American dystopian action film. It was directed by Francis Lawrence, with a screenplay from Simon Beaufoy and Michael deBruyn. The movie is based on the book Catching Fire, written by Suzanne Collins in 2009. After their joint victory in the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark live comfortably but struggle with emotional turmoil in District 12. Katniss remains distant from Peeta due to her traumatic experience in the Games. President Snow pays her a visit and informs her that her actions have sparked rebellions throughout Panem. To quell the uprisings, he demands that they pretend to be in love during the Victory Tour or risk losing their families and destroying District 12. However, their speeches during the tour only fuel more unrest among the districts. In a desperate attempt to convince the citizens of their love, Katniss and Peeta publicly announce their engagement.
Despite attempts to convince them otherwise, President Snow and the districts remain unmoved. While in Capitol, Katniss meets Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee. Upon returning home, she witnesses the brutality of the Peacekeepers as Gale is publicly whipped for trying to defend civilians. This leads to a heated conflict involving Katniss, Peeta, and Haymitch. The third Quarter Quell is announced, named the 75th Hunger Games, with a twist: past victors will be chosen as tributes. As the sole living female victor from District 12, Katniss is selected and Peeta volunteers to join her. In a final effort to stop the Games, Peeta reveals during his pre-Games interview that they are already married and expecting a child, causing further outrage among citizens of the Capitol.
