The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014) is a dystopian action film directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Peter Craig and Danny Strong. It is based on Suzanne Collins’ novel from a decade earlier. Following their rescue from the destroyed arena of the 75th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen, Beetee, and Finnick Odair are taken to District 13, an underground district that has been leading the rebellion. There, Katniss is reunited with her mother and sister Prim and meets President Alma Coin, the leader of the rebels. She learns that her actions in destroying the forcefield led to widespread riots in many districts, causing President Snow to retaliate by bombing District 12. In order to gain support for the rebellion, Coin asks Katniss to become the ‘Mockingjay’ – a symbol of hope – which she reluctantly agrees to after seeing Peeta being used as propaganda on television.
As she surveys the ruins of District 12, Katniss is struck by the sight of her old house still standing, adorned with white roses from President Snow. Her film team joins her, accompanied by Effie Trinket as a stylist and her close friend Gale as a bodyguard. They embark on a journey to District 8 where Katniss is filmed receiving salutes from injured civilians at a hospital. However, upon seeing the footage, Snow orders an airstrike that results in the tragic deaths of all those inside. The cameras capture Katniss and Gale taking down two Capitol hovercrafts and capturing her impassioned speech that incites the rebellion in District 7. Moving on to District 12, they film Katniss singing ‘The Hanging Tree’. At the same time, rebel forces in District 5 launch an attack on the Capitol’s main source of electricity – a hydroelectric dam.
