The Hunt (2012)
The Hunt (2012) is a Danish psychological drama film directed by Thomas Vinterberg and starring Mads Mikkelsen. Lucas, a member of a close-knit rural Danish community, misses his teenage son Marcus, who mostly lives with his ex-wife. However, he has formed strong relationships with the young children at the local kindergarten, where he works since the school at which he taught closed. Things start to look up for Lucas when Marcus expresses a desire to live with him and he starts dating Nadja, a co-worker. One of the children at the kindergarten is Klara, daughter of Lucas’ best friend Theo. She often wanders off on her own when her parents argue and Lucas has frequently been there to help her out.
He even allows her to walk his dog whenever she wants and accommodates her aversion to stepping on cracks. Over time, Klara develops feelings for Lucas due to his kindness towards her. After receiving a kiss and small gift from her, he gently rejects her and she becomes downhearted. Grethe arranges for an acquaintance to question Klara, who responds with nods to the man’s probing inquiries. Despite Grethe’s belief that children are truthful, she reports to the authorities and notifies the parents of other children at the kindergarten. However, Klara eventually changes her story, but the adults attribute it to denial of what occurred. As a result, Lucas is fired from his job, his friendship with Theo crumbles, and he is ostracized by the community as a pedophile.
