The Ides of March (2011), directed by George Clooney, is an American political drama. The screenplay was written by Clooney, Grant Heslov, and Beau Willimon, based on Willimon’s play Farragut North. The film follows the story of Stephen Meyers, the junior campaign manager for Governor of Pennsylvania Mike Morris, as he competes against Arkansas Senator Ted Pullman in the Democratic presidential primary. Both campaigns are seeking the endorsement of Senator Franklin Thompson, who holds enough delegates to secure the nomination for either candidate. While at the Morris campaign’s headquarters in Cincinnati, Meyers receives a call from Tom Duffy, Pullman’s campaign manager. Duffy asks him to meet confidentially at a local bar.

Unable to reach his boss Paul Zara for advice, Meyers decides to go ahead and meet with Duffy. However, when Zara calls back later on, Meyers chooses not to disclose his meeting with Duffy. Meyers begins a romantic involvement with Molly Stearns, a charming intern whose father holds a high position in the Democratic National Committee. He confesses to a frustrated Zara that he had a meeting with Duffy, who proposed that Pullman would appoint Thompson as Secretary of State if he endorses him. Zara and Meyers converse about this with Morris, agreeing that they must extend the same proposition to Thompson. However, Morris declines due to his strong opposition towards Thompson’s beliefs and is determined to run an ethical campaign without any bargaining involved.
