The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)
The fantasy film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009), was directed and co-written by Terry Gilliam along with Charles McKeown. Heath Ledger’s performance in most of the movie was later replaced by Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell as different versions of his character in the dream world. This was Ledger’s final acting role and a dedication to him and co-producer William Vince. Doctor Parnassus runs a struggling travelling theatre troupe with his daughter Valentina, sleight-of-hand expert Anton, and dwarf assistant Percy. Their main attraction is the ‘Imaginarium’ portal that offers participants the choice between facing difficult truths or indulging in blissful ignorance. After losing yet another person to Mr. Nick, personified as the Devil who frequently appears to taunt Parnassus over his failures, outside a London pub, Parnassus grumbles about his loss.
Parnassus is reminded by Mr. Nick of the approaching milestone of Valentina’s 16th birthday, which will mark the moment when her soul is claimed by him. It is not the first time Mr. Nick has played a similar game; in fact, centuries ago he tricked Parnassus into accepting immortality. As they make their way across a bridge, Anton spots a man hanging beneath it. The troupe manages to rescue him and revive him, and he coughs up a golden pipe that allowed him to survive the hanging. Despite being asked about his past, the man claims to have no memory and convinces his rescuers of this. Parnassus can’t help but feel sorrow for his daughter as he ponders her impending fate, and it is during this moment that Mr. Nick appears once again.
