Wells’ novel with a similar title. In the film, Cecilia Kass finds herself in an abusive relationship with wealthy optics engineer and businessman, Adrian Griffin. He is also the CEO of Cobalt, a human-computer augmentation company. One night, she drugs Adrian with her diazepam and escapes his highly-secured house with her younger sister’s help. Cecilia seeks refuge at the home of her childhood friend, Detective James Lanier, and his teenage daughter, Sydney. After two weeks have passed since her escape, Adrian commits suicide and leaves Cecilia $5 million in his will. His brother and lawyer, Tom, takes care of all the arrangements. However, Cecilia starts to feel like there is another presence in the house as strange events occur. James tries to reassure her that it is just trauma and paranoia taking over her mind.
During a job interview, her work portfolio was mysteriously removed and she ended up fainting. The doctor later revealed that her system had high levels of diazepam. To her shock, she discovered the same bloodied bottle of diazepam in her bathroom, which she had used to drug Adrian. In the presence of James, Cecilia meets with Tom and shares her theory that Adrian faked his own death and used his expertise in optics to become invisible and torment her. However, this theory is quickly dismissed. Soon after, an unseen force hits Sydney and she assumes it was Cecilia. While alone at home, Cecilia tries various tactics to catch the figure she believes hit Sydney. She ultimately finds Adrian’s phone in the attic and receives a text saying “surprise”. In a moment of desperation, Cecilia dumps paint down the attic trap door, hoping to reveal the invisible figure. A violent struggle ensues but somehow Cecilia manages to escape unharmed.
