The Irishman (2019)
The film The Irishman (2019) is a Martin Scorsese-directed and produced epic gangster movie, based on Steven Zaillian’s screenplay adapted from the book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt. It follows the story of Frank Sheeran, an elderly Irish-American WWII veteran living in a nursing home, who reflects on his past as a hitman for the Italian-American Mafia. Sheeran starts off as a delivery truck driver in 1950s Philadelphia and begins selling meat shipments to local gangster ‘Skinny Razor’ from the Philadelphia crime family, led by Angelo Bruno. When faced with accusations of theft from his employer, Sheeran’s union lawyer Bill Bufalino helps him avoid charges by refusing to reveal his clients to the judge. Through Bill, Sheeran meets Russell Bufalino, head of the Northeastern Pennsylvania crime family, and starts carrying out jobs for him and other members of the South Philadelphia underworld. These jobs include ‘painting houses’, which is code for contract killing.
Soon after being introduced to Jimmy Hoffa, head of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Ed Sheeran learns about Hoffa’s financial connections to the Northeastern Pennsylvania crime family. He faces difficulties in handling his fellow rising Teamster, Anthony ‘Tony Pro’ Provenzano, and increasing pressure from the federal government. However, Sheeran and Hoffa develop a close bond, with Hoffa taking a liking to Sheeran’s daughter Peggy. As a result, Sheeran becomes his main bodyguard. When John F. Kennedy becomes president in 1960, Bufalino is pleased while Hoffa is enraged. Robert F. Kennedy, who is appointed Attorney General by his brother, creates a “Get Hoffa” task force aimed at taking down Hoffa. Eventually, Hoffa is arrested and convicted for jury tampering in 1964.
