Sean Durkin’s biographical sports drama film, The Iron Claw (2023), follows the story of the Von Erichs, a family of professional wrestlers plagued by a supposed curse. The film chronicles the struggles of Fritz Von Erich’s sons to live up to their father’s expectations and achieve success in the world of wrestling from 1979 to the early 1990s. As owner of World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW), retired wrestler Fritz once had dreams of winning the prestigious NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship. But his focus now is on his sons: Kevin and David, who wrestle for WCCW, Kerry, who hopes to make it as a discus thrower, and Mike, who dreams of being a musician. Kevin, currently holding the title of Texas Heavyweight Champion, shares with his girlfriend Pam the story of their family’s ‘curse’, which was allegedly responsible for the death of his older brother Jack Jr. when they were just kids.
This so-called curse has been attributed to Fritz changing his last name from Adkisson to that of his mother’s family-who have also suffered from constant tragedy. In a recent match, Kevin emerged victorious over NWA World Heavyweight Champion Harley Race by disqualification, placing him in the top spot to potentially challenge for the title. However, Fritz was disappointed with Kevin’s delayed recovery after receiving a vertical suplex on concrete. On a brighter note, David impressed with his natural showmanship during a promo. The 1980 Summer Olympics boycott shattered Kerry’s dreams of competing and he returned home where Fritz encouraged him to pursue wrestling. As time passed, Kevin, Kerry and David defeated the Fabulous Freebirds to claim the Six-Man Tag Team Championship.
