The Island of Dr. Moreau (1977) is an American science fiction horror film helmed by director Don Taylor. It is the second English-language adaptation of H. G. Wells’ 1896 novel of the same name. The story follows three men who are stranded in the Pacific Ocean after the sinking of their ship, the Lady Vain. One man perishes at sea and after seventeen days, the remaining two reach an island where they encounter dangerous animals. Braddock, one of the survivors and an engineer from the Lady Vain, is taken in by a compound run by a scientist known as ‘Dr. Moreau’. Other inhabitants include Montgomery, Moreau’s associate and a mercenary; M’Ling, Moreau’s mute assistant with a deformed appearance; and Maria, a young woman also living on the island. Under Moreau’s care, Braddock recovers from his ordeal but is warned not to leave the compound at night.

He is treated as an esteemed guest and given access to Moreau’s library. However, Braddock soon discovers that there are more unsettling creatures lurking on the island when he witnesses Moreau and Montgomery mistreating a chained non-human being. These creatures are the result of Moreau’s experiments on a variety of wild animals, in which he injects them with a serum containing human DNA. However, even with this infusion of human genetics, some of these hybrids still retain their animal instincts and fail to display human behavior. This often infuriates Moreau and leaves him feeling dissatisfied with his attempts. Later that night, as Braddock processes the startling revelation, he is joined by Maria in his room where they engage in sexual activity.
