The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996) is an American sci-fi horror film, based on the novel of the same name by H.G. Wells. It was directed by John Frankenheimer. United Nations negotiator Edward Douglas survives a plane crash in the Java Sea and is rescued by a passing boat, where he meets Dr. Montgomery. After learning that the boat has no radio, Douglas is promised transportation to Timor by the captain. However, upon arriving at Montgomery’s destination, also known as ‘Moreau’s Island’, he is advised to disembark so that Montgomery can use the island’s radio instead. While there, Montgomery provides Douglas with a meal from a shipment of rabbits and then escorts him to his room in the Main House, where he is warned not to wander and encounters Dr. Moreau’s daughter Aissa before being led to his room by Montgomery himself.
As they travel, they discuss Moreau’s disappearance due to his fixation on animal experimentation. Montgomery then secures Douglas in his room for safety, but he manages to escape that same night. While exploring, he hears unusual cries coming from a nearby laboratory. Intrigued, he enters the building and discovers a room filled with medical equipment, incubation chambers, and artificial ‘wombs’ containing developing fetuses. The cries resound again and he witnesses the astonishing scene of a female human/llama mutant giving birth while being attended by doctors. In shock, he watches from a distance as one of the male doctors removes his mask to reveal that he too is a human/animal hybrid before fleeing. Douglas follows Aissa to the ‘village’ of mutants after being noticed by the doctor.
