The Italian Job (2003)

The Italian Job (2003), directed by F. Gary Gray, is an American heist action film with an original story inspired by its 1969 British counterpart. The plot centers around a group of thieves planning to steal stolen gold from their former associate. However, despite the shared title, this film deviates significantly from its source material in terms of plot and characters. The team, led by safecracker John Bridger, sets their sights on stealing $35 million worth of gold bullion in Venice from a group of Italian gangsters who had previously taken it. Comprising the team are professional fixer Charlie Croker, computer expert Lyle aka ‘Napster’, wheelman Handsome Rob, inside man Steve, and explosives expert Left Ear. Despite a successful heist, Steve ultimately double-crosses them during their getaway to Austria, killing John in the process. In order to protect his teammates, Rob sacrifices himself by driving the van off a bridge into the water while using air tanks from the heist to survive.
Meanwhile, Steve abandons them for dead. A year later in Philadelphia, Charlie discovers that Steve has a new identity and is using Ukrainian jeweler Yevhen to launder the stolen gold, financing his lavish lifestyle in Los Angeles. Determined to take down Steve and retrieve the stolen bullion, Charlie assembles the team and enlists the help of John’s daughter Stella, an expert in private safe cracking. At Steve’s luxurious mansion, disguised as a cable technician, Stella surveys the interior layout and locates the safe where the gold is kept. Unbeknownst to Steve, he asks Stella out on a date. Meanwhile, Skinny Pete supplies the explosives and Wrench modifies three Mini Coopers for their plan to blow open the safe while Steve is away on his date. These customized cars will then be used to transport the gold from the mansion.
