The Italian Job (1969)
The British comedy caper film, The Italian Job (1969), was written by Troy Kennedy Martin and directed by Peter Collinson. As thief Roger Beckerman drove through the Alps, his car collided with a bulldozer parked in a tunnel by the Mafia, resulting in his untimely death. The Mafia then disposed of Beckerman’s car and body by pushing them over a cliff and into the river below. Meanwhile, Beckerman’s friend and fellow thief Charlie Croker was released from prison and reunited with his girlfriend Lorna to celebrate his newfound freedom. However, when Croker went to meet with Beckerman for a job they had planned in Italy, he was surprised to find Beckerman’s widow instead. She insisted that Croker continue her late husband’s plan – which he had already completed before his passing – of stealing $4 million worth of gold bullion from a security convoy meant for Fiat as a down payment for a car factory in China.
Croker breaks back into prison to ask British nationalist crime lord Mr. Bridger for financial backing. Initially unconvinced, Bridger soon offers support upon learning of the heist’s target. With assistance from Bridger’s organization, led by his right-hand man Camp Freddie, Croker enlists a team of experts, including Lorna and computer specialist Professor Simon Peach – crucial for sabotaging Turin’s traffic control system. After completing preparations, Bridger summons Croker and his team to a staged funeral service, where he reveals that the Mafia killed Beckermann due to his planned heist and advises them to be cautious but determined not to return empty-handed. Once in Italy, Croker and some of his crew split off from the rest during their journey to Turin in order to avoid arousing suspicion.
