The Judge (2014)
The American legal drama film, The Judge (2014), was directed by David Dobkin. Hank Palmer, a successful lawyer in Chicago, was granted a continuance for his case when he received news of his mother’s passing. Before heading back to his hometown in Indiana for the funeral, he had a heated argument with his wife, Lisa, whom he is currently divorcing. Upon arriving in Carlinville, Hank is reunited with his older brother Glen, who owns a tire shop, and his younger brother, Dale. Hank’s father is the Judge Joseph Palmer of Carlinville’s criminal court but Hank simply refers to him as ‘Judge’. The two share a strained relationship due to the Judge’s harsh treatment towards Hank in regards to his past mistakes. This included a car accident when Hank was seventeen that not only ruined Glen’s future in Major League Baseball but also resulted in Hank being sent to juvenile detention instead of receiving community service or any kind of support from his father.
While discreetly observing his father presiding a case from the courtroom gallery, Hank notices a momentary confusion from the Judge as he struggles to recall his long-time bailiff’s name. The following morning, after attending a funeral, Hank points out that the Judge’s car has sustained damage to the right-front headlight and fender. As a recovered alcoholic, Hank accuses his father of driving under the influence. However, the Judge defensively denies any memory of an accident occurring. Adding to the complexity of their strained family relationship is Hank’s former girlfriend, Sam Powell. His doubts are heightened when he learns that Carla, Sam’s daughter and a law school student whom he had previously flirted with, may be his child. Sam discloses that Glen is actually Carla’s father, as she had slept with him briefly when Hank unexpectedly left Carlinville.
