The Killing (1956)
The Killing (1956), an American film noir directed by Stanley Kubrick and produced by James B. Harris, follows the story of Johnny Clay, a seasoned criminal who is planning his final heist before settling down with his fiancée, Fay. His plan involves robbing the money-counting room at a racetrack during a high-stakes race. To pull off the heist, Johnny enlists the help of a corrupt cop, George Peatty (a betting window teller who can gain access to the backroom), a sharpshooter to cause a distraction by shooting the favorite horse during the race, a wrestler to start a fight at the track bar, and a track bartender. George confides in his wife, Sherry, about their impending robbery in hopes that it will impress her and prevent her from leaving him due to broken promises of wealth made when they married.
At first, Sherry is skeptical of his claims, but upon discovering the truth about the robbery, she recruits her lover Val Cannon to steal the cash from George and his colleagues. The theft is a success, although one of their team members gets fatally shot by a security guard. As they wait for Johnny to arrive at their designated meeting spot, Val and an accomplice surprise them all in an attempt to take the money for themselves. A violent shootout breaks out and only George manages to escape with severe injuries. He returns home and shoots Sherry before collapsing. Spotting a wounded George on the street when he arrives at the apartment, Johnny realizes something has gone terribly wrong. In a frantic effort to transport all the stolen money, he purchases a large suitcase and struggles to cram it all inside.
