The King (2019)
The epic historical film, The King (2019), directed by David Michôd, is based on various plays from William Shakespeare’s Henriad. Hal, also known as Henry, Prince of Wales, is the eldest son of King Henry IV of England. He has a distant relationship with his father and shows no interest in inheriting the throne. Instead, he spends his time drinking, engaging in promiscuous behavior, and making jokes with his friend John Falstaff in Eastcheap. However, things change when Henry IV reveals that Hal’s younger brother Thomas will be the new successor to the throne. Thomas is sent to suppress Hotspur’s rebellion but is outshone by Hal who challenges Hotspur to a one-on-one battle. Although Hal emerges victorious and ends the conflict peacefully, Thomas feels overshadowed and complains about losing his chance for glory. Tragically, Thomas later dies in battle while fighting in Wales.
When Henry IV passes away with Hal by his side, Hal becomes anointed as King Henry V. Despite criticism for being weak, Hal chooses to pursue peace and reconciliation with his late father’s enemies. After King Henry IV’s death and Hal’s ascension to the throne, he pursues a path of peace and reconciliation with his father’s former adversaries, despite potential criticism for appearing weak. During his coronation feast, the Dauphin of France sends an insulting gift in the form of a ball, but Hal chooses to view it as a reflection of his youth. His sister Philippa, now Queen of Denmark, advises him to be cautious as noble interests are often hidden. Hal also questions an assassin who claims to have been sent by King Charles VI of France to kill him. Meanwhile, French agents approach English nobles Cambridge and Grey in hopes of swaying their loyalty to France.
